If you haven’t heard about the Manti Te’o situation yet, you’re probably living under a rock. But just to let you know about the situation, Manti Te’o is a player on the Notre Dame football team, a team that made it to the national championship game. Manti Te’o came in 2nd place in the Heisman Trophy voting this year. He became a sympathetic figure in college football this year as a result of a story that came out in early October in Sports Illustrated that stated that in the span of 6 hours on a day in September, he was notified that both his grandmother and his reported girlfriend passed away. The grandmother has been confirmed to have passed away. The girlfriend, according to the story, died of leukemia. This girlfriend, also got into a serious car accident in California earlier in the year. Nevertheless, that same week in which both his grandmother and reported girlfriend died, he played a great game against Michigan State, in which he recorded 12 tackles. In an interview with ESPN, when asked how he was able to play with such a heavy heart, he told the reporters that his girlfriend made him promise to play in the next game if she were to die of the disease. Everyone ate the story up, he became the face of college football for the season. Fast forward to yesterday. A story comes out on Deadspin (the link you can click above) that Te’o says that he was “Catfished”. (Yes people, getting “catfished” is now a verb apparently) Getting “catfished” is now a common part of our lexicon now, in reference to a popular show on MTV, “Catfish”, where people talk to people online and form romantic relationships online, only to find out that the person that they were talking to for so long isn’t who they actually thought they were. In some extreme cases, they aren’t even the same gender, race, etc. In any event, Te’o says he was “catfished”, and that this person who he thought was his girlfriend wasn’t actually real. He says that he was tricked, and Notre Dame’s athletic director made a statement reiterating this. You can read the rest of the details of the story by clicking the link above. What is the cause for debate here is whether or not Te’o actually knew about this situation the entire time, whether he created the situation to gain sympathy or publicity. This story has been the hottest topic in the sports world. Everybody has their own opinions on the situation, and new details are emerging by the minute. What I have to say about this situation is this: I’m finding it hard to believe this story. You mean to tell me, you and your girlfriend, who he stated was “the love of his life”, never Skyped at all? Okay, say you guys didn’t Skype. Fine. You mean to tell me, she got into a major car accident, and you didn’t visit her? Keep in mind, hes a Notre Dame football player, arguably the most popular college football team in the country, they would have found a way to fly him out if he wanted. Finances were not an obstacle. You mean to tell me, she was diagnosed with leukemia, and you didn’t go to visit her? Okay, fine. The “love of your life” DIES, and you don’t attend the FUNERAL? Okay, okay, fine. After the funeral happens, and shes laid to rest, you couldn’t go to the cemetery to even lay some flowers?!? Something fishy is going on. As I said, more details will emerge as time goes on. We’ll just have to wait and see. Whats your take on the story? Feel free to leave comments, lets get a discussion going.
Until next time,
GQ
